Houston Area's Asian American Students “Go Green” in Art Contest
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association Launches New Art Contest and Expo
HOUSTON – FEB., 2012 – The Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA), with support from Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC), announced today the ‘Go Green’ Art Contest, aimed at engaging Asian/Pacific American high school students to express environmental issues – such as sustainability, clean air, water quality, renewable energy and recycling – through art. The contest will accept participants from three Houston-area school districts and scholarships will be awarded in the categories of drawing, 2D and 3D designs. The judging panel will include government officials, experts and advocates in the fields of arts and environment and our sponsors. Wells Fargo is the ‘Legacy Sponsor’ of the contest. Other sponsors include: HEB, Houston Community College, City of Houston - Waste Management, DN Commercial Realty and the Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce. 
“As a way to celebrate our 20th anniversary of service to the Houston and Fort Bend communities in 2012, we wanted to showcase an issue that the Asian/Pacific American community is well-versed in,” said Alma Duldulao-Ybarra, the executive director of APAHA. “We encourage Asian students to show their creativity, passion and enthusiasm in conveying green stewardship through art.”
Asian/Pacific American students from three Houston-area school districts, Houston ISD, Fort Bend ISD and Alief ISD, along with students from Asian language schools in the greater Houston area, are invited to participate in the contest. The entry must be original work, and the judging will be based on artistic execution, originality and creativity, interpretation of the theme and effectiveness in teaching and engaging the overall community. Scholarships will be awarded to the winners by APAHA.
“We are so proud to enable Asian/Pacific American youth to express their artistic talents by highlighting a plethora of environmental issues,” said Charlene Jung, Asian Segment Marketing program manager at Wells Fargo. “Together we are making a healthier, more sustainable world with thriving communities like the greater Houston area.”
Students need to register through their schools by Feb. 22. Entries must be submitted by March 22. Finalists will be judged during an Art Expo at Tracy Gee Community Center (3599 Westcenter Dr.) on April 22, where First, Second, and Third Place winners will be announced. The Grand Prize Winner and People’s Choice Award will be presented at APAHA’s annual gala event, scheduled for May 18 at the Omni Galleria Houston Hotel. The Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA) was formed in 1992 to “promote awareness and increase understanding of the Asian/Pacific American culture and its diversity through education and celebration, focusing on May, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM), and continuing throughout the year.”  To make a difference in our community, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA) has collaborated with various community and educational entities to provide ongoing educational, cultural and scholarship programs to the Asian/Pacific and Greater Houston communities.
